A Week Of It: Probes Leaky Nats Extensively

Last weekend two Sunday newspapers produced emails revealing National Party leader Don Brash has connections with the hard right of New Zealand's political spectrum. Whilst the Sunday Star-Times contained references and excerpts from screeds of emails from among others Roger Douglas, Roger Kerr and Listener columnist David Young (Former PR man for the Business Round Table) the Herald on Sunday seemed only capable of obtaining one solitary leaked email. NZ LEAD:

Maori Seats Likely To Go In Any United Future-National Coalition -

Earlier this week United Future's leader Peter Dunne took the time to explain to Scoop what his parties bottom lines will be in post election coalition talks. Whilst uneasy about National's plans to scrap the Maori seats - should they become the next Government - Mr Dunne explained that keeping the Maori seats was not a bottom line for his party if they enter into a coalition with National. SCOOP REPORTS:

STATE OF IT: Brash Seeks Culture Change – Is Resistance Futile?

Selwyn Manning writes that as is often the case introductions to concepts of culture-change arrive through fictitious means. Star Trek’s most creepy creation, The Borg, began: "This is the Borg Collective. Prepare to be assimilated. We will add your biological and technological distinctives to our own. You will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile." But should National’s plans to scrap the seven Maori electorates, render the Treaty Of Waitangi irrelevant, and attempt to assimilate all peoples unto the ‘mainstream’ be considered hypothetical? Definitely not. See… Is Resistance Futile? [1]

Fiji Anti-Homosexual Act Laws Would See HIV Increase

- Suppression of sexual minorities “contrary to good public health practice” A call to criminalise homosexual sex in Fiji will endanger public health and foster the spread of HIV/AIDS, the New Zealand AIDS Foundation says. The Foundation has expressed deep concern at the likely public health impact of a proposal by the Fijian Methodist Church for a mass march to pressure their Government to criminalise gay and lesbian sex, after a Fijian high court judge ruled that consensual gay sex in private was protected by the country’s constitution and was not illegal. Clark Cites 'Leaked Memo' When Questioning Nats' ACC Policy

- Helen Clark today challenged the National Party to say how much of Dr Brash’s $3.5 million war chest target came from the insurance industry. “A leaked memo from the Insurance Council to its members makes it clear that details of National’s policy to privatise ACC have been deliberately withheld from the public after consultation with the Insurance Council. “National’s policy opens up to the insurance industry ACC’s levy business of more than $2 billion. That’s all the ACC’s levy business except the non-earner account," Helen Clark said. See... How much did National get for its ACC policy? [1]

- Teachers will benefit by $100 million a year once National's lower taxes are in place. A trip to www.taxcut.co.nz compares the Labour and National packages. A small number of middle income families are better off with Labour's package, and every other working New Zealand is better off with National's package.
