Roe vs. Wade is a Red Herring for Another Fish
Roe vs. Wade is a Red Herring for Another Fish
By Edith Fletcher
News panels and commentators keep the Roe V. Wade question in front of John Roberts' nomination. It shouldn't be there.
Roe is being used, as usually is the case with Roe, as a lure for piranhas and small fry alike to duke it out in the muddy water of politics.
Polls show that the majority of Americans do not want Roe to be overruled. The administration would be committing future suicide to actually manage to do so. Not now, but later. They do not want Roe to be overturned for that reason, but are far from saying so to their base. There is something else on the hook.
What is imperative to them is to finish giving the country over to the full power of corporate "wisdom," a wisdom that is great, but not comparable to that of Solomon. Enron and WorldCom are examples of that lack of clear thinking. Excessive loss of good jobs to outsourcing without attention to easing American workers' pain is another. Turning attention away from the business obligations in strengthening Social Security, health insurance and the environment are others. And don't forget business outsourcing itself to tax-free Bahamas.
John Roberts is the perfect tool to turn the gears more in the direction of business before the baby, the baby that a Solomon wouldn't split. His experience in corporate cases is impeccable. His background is firmly in place from clerking for Justice Rehnquist to dismissing the "hapless toad" of California.
Do not be worried for Roe. Save it for the small fry of Mom and Pop stores and the kids who shop there.
