Scoop Report: Helen Clark Rules
Out Green Zimbabwe Ban Plan
Selwyn Manning reports that Prime Minister Helen
Clark this morning ruled out the Green Party's plan designed
to stop NZ Cricket's Black Cap tour of Zimbabwe from going
ahead. Helen Clark told TVNZ's Breakfast programme that her
government would not resort to "Mugabe style" laws to
prevent the tour from going ahead. Greens co-leader Rod
Donald said: "I have drafted the Bill in such a way that it
preserves the freedoms of individual New Zealanders
enshrined in the Bill of Rights Act." See... Prime

GE Test-Tube
Cows To Graze In NZ
- AgResearch's deal to grow GE Cows for pharmaceuticals will meet with huge public opposition as it is a threat to our Dairy industry's international reputation which could cost the country millions. The proposal is totally contrary to the findings of the Royal Commission on GM that our dairy herd should not be used like this. There is also a financial cloud over the company involved that could leave New Zealand exposed to huge costs if, like previous ventures, the deal ends in bankruptcy. See... Mallard Tells Trustees Nats Lied Over Ed Ministry Funding
Claim
- Claims that Budget 2005 delivered more
funding to the Ministry of Education than to schools has
been attacked by Education Minister Trevor Mallard as one of
a series of National Party lies. "That schools didn't get a
substantial increase in funding out of the budget is a
complete myth," said Trevor Mallard. "Bill English has
repeatedly said this. It is one of his biggest lies." See...

Bilateral: Goff And Downer Broker Progress On Aussie
Apple Ban
- The longstanding dispute over access for New Zealand apples to the Australian market should be resolved soon. Strong indications were given of this in a discussion between the Foreign Ministers of Australia and New Zealand in Queensland yesterday. "Alexander Downer confirmed this weekend that the analysis would be released 'soon' and that the decision made on it would be science-based. Zimbabwe: Amnesty International (NZ) Cites Deaths At Harare Settlement [1] As New Zealand continues to debate whether the Black Caps go to Zimbabwe, Amnesty International has cited reports that at least three have died -- including a pregnant woman and a four-year-old child. “Over the last 48 hours, Porta Farm – a settlement of at least 10,000 people -- has been obliterated. People have watched their lives being completely destroyed – and many are now being forcibly removed in trucks by police. At the moment we are not sure where they are being taken,” said spokesperson Kolawole Olaniyan. See... Zimbabwe: Deaths as mass evictions continue [2]
