Remembering
The Holocaust
Then take Al Nakba
Raw as nerves
Seared pain
In the brain
Bodies basking in the sun
Less hands less legs
Less life than would be
If Israel had cared
Babies cradled in a ditch
Massacred lifeless
So many that lived
Orphaned lives
Sheltered in tents
As the cruel winds
Blew them out
Of their time-honored
Homes Stern Gang
Rampages scavenged
The land burnt looted
And terrorized drove
People like cattle
Into the streets
Off their property
Independence Day
For Israel was the death
Of life as Palestine
Had known it
In the orange groves
And olive fields
Terraced gardens
And villages
Ransacked
Ravaged
Lives left to rot
In the stench
Of refugee camps
Pushed down
Ground down
Ignored Palestinian
Lives still dangle
Precariously
Along the edge
With no rights
Except to return
Waiting for the knock
That bulldozes
And tumbles
Walls and hearts
Into the abyss
Suffering
Is unmitigated
As the drone
Of fighter jets
And attack
Helicopters
Roar past
Missiles strafe
Flesh tears
Besieged
By memories
That cannot
Be forgotten
Because they
Are repeated
Over and over
Al Nakba's
Grave landscape
Casts a long dark
Shadow that meets
Nazi atrocities
In a tortured
Horror chamber
Bereft of human
Compassion
As dry of feelings
As parched
Bones weathered
Into dust
