NEWSFLASH: Former ACT MP Donna Awatere Huata Loses

Published: Thu 18 Nov 2004 02:25 PM
ACT MP Donna Awatere-Huata appears to have lost her bid to stay in Parliament till the next election. Ms Awatere was booted out of the ACT Party after she was charged by the Serious Fraud Office over payments made by her Pipi Foundation educational charity.
Ms Huata lost her first case in the High Court attempting to prevent the ACT Party from having her booted from Parliament under the Electoral Integrity Act (aka Party Hopping or Waka Jumping Act).
However she won an injunction in the Appeal Court restraining the ACT Party from notifying the Speaker that she had left the party.
Scoop has a reporter at the Supreme Court where the decision was announced at 2.15pm today. Details to follow.
