Richard Prebble has resigned as leader of the ACT party, standing down after a series of poor poll ratings.
ACT has suffer in recent months, after National began to rise in political polls. National leader Don Brash, clearly an advocate for ACT principles, effectively eroded ACT supporters who have long felt disfavoured by the National Party under former leaders Bill English and Jenny Shipley.
Speculation over Prebble’s leadership has been rife in recent weeks and this morning, he asked the party to hold a primary election for a new leader.
Prebble says ACT has been a party made up of
“fresh ideas” and will achieve more with a fresh face at the
helm.
