9/11 CitizensWatch News/Lobbying Initiative
From Kyle F. Hence
A comprehensive examination of 9/11 and its aftermath demands review of a variety of difficult and controversial issues
and questions. Toward that end CitizensWatch has compiled the following stories that have appeared recently online and
in the press. (See below);
Now, a note on recent statements by the Family Steering Committee for an Independent Commission and a call to LOBBY for
Congressional hearings and extension of the 9/11 Commisson:
This challenge being brought forward by the 9/11 Family Steering Committee elucidated in their questions for President
Bush (and Condoleeza Rice) and a call for hearings in the Senate Intelligence Committee are of particular importance and
could, if enough public pressure is brought to bear on Committee heads Senators Roberts and Rockefeller, help expose the
egregious compromises and failings of the 9/11 Commission and the stonewalling by the White House and lead to calls for
a higher investigative standard, transparency and addressing the appearance, if not the reality, of blatant conflicts of
interest.
[Ultimately we require a far deeper analysis of the 9/11 attacks and the forces that lead to them. And this
CitizensWatch is committed over the long term.]
Judging by the actions (or lack of them in some cases) of the Commission a cover-up and whtie wash is certainly afoot.
Judging by the actions of the White House it appears at least that they have something to hide.
In both, we see a dangerous pattern that denies accountability; this bodes great ill and peril for our country if
allowed to stand unchallenged.
The latest Family Steering Committee Statements have been posted at 911 CitizensWatch. Again, as you'll read the
Committee calls for hearings in the Senate Intelligence Committee and an extension of the life of the 9/11 Commission.
Their case is compelling and approach more than reasonable; their statements address specifics though further background
can be found at the CW web site and at their own site at: www.911independentcommission.org)

EDITORIAL in support of an extension
9/11 panel should get time it needs
Tuesday, February 24th, 2004
New York Daily News
After being stonewalled for more than a year, the independent 9/11 commission finally is making progress. But it must
have adequate time to fulfill its congressional mandate - to make "a full and complete accounting" of the circumstances
surrounding Sept. 11.
The President and Congress should immediately extend the May 27 deadline to Jan. 10. - even if that means potentially
embarrassing public hearings with high-ranking officials at the height of the election season. The creation of this
commission originally was delayed because we were a nation at war. Its late-in-coming investigation should not now be
compromised because we are a nation in the midst of an election year.
The White House and House Speaker Dennis Hastert have only recently indicated they would support a two-month extension.
But that falls far short of the kind of leadership needed. In light of new information coming in, it is clear that more
time is called for. The commission recently interviewed two individuals formerly associated with the FBI who offered
highly relevant information. In a closed-door interview afterward attended by a member of the 9/11 Family Steering
Committee, one of the individuals said, "absolutely, 100%, 9/11 could have been prevented."
These people, and many more who have come forward, finally are being heard, but the panel needs time to investigate
their claims.
Moreover, the commission finally has concluded negotiations with the White House. Though limited access to censored,
edited summaries of presidential daily briefings and promises of closed-door informal meetings with the President and
others in his administration hardly rise to the "unfettered, unprecedented access" heralded by the press, this agreement
at least will supply some information on what the White House knew prior to 9/11.
Rep. Vito Fossella (R-N.Y.) has introduced counterpart legislation in the House to the Senate's six-month extension
proposal from Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-Conn.) and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.). This extension must pass. Only then can the
commission be confident that it will have the time to accurately report to Americans why 3,000 people were killed on
homeland soil on 9/11. It's a report this nation deserves.
- Breitweiser and Harvey are on the Family Steering Committee for the 9/11 commission.
