Road and commuter train disruptions of unprecedented scope have affected the Wellington region this morning with slips and downed trees throughout the city and surrounding areas. Eastbourne and Wainuiomata have been cut off and the Johnsonville commuter rail line is expected to be out for all day today at least. Storm strength Southerlies have been pounding Wellington's south coast for 24 hours and power outages and ferry disruptions have been just part of the impact.
Further north the Rangitikei River is breaking its banks near Bulls. Feilding (click for images), Marton and Tangimoana have experienced flooding and are undergoing Civil Defence evacuations. Most highways in the lower half of the North Island are closed.
