Zimbabwe Continues To Be Suspended From Commonwealth
By Selwyn Manning – Scoop Co-Editor
Commonwealth leaders have endorsed a Group ff Six recommendation that the status quo will remain - that Zimbabwe will
continue to be suspended from the Commonwealth.
Jamaica has been made chair of the Group of Six committee and will liaise and encourage Zimbabwe to meet a series of
conditions before the suspension will be lifted.
Once the chairperson believes sufficient progress had been made, he would consult the Group of Six committee. The
guiding conditions include observation of the Harare Declaration on human rights. Once the chairperson believes
sufficient progress had been made, the chair will report back to the Group of Six seeking consensus before it recommends
to the Commonwealth leaders that Zimbabwe be invited back into the fold.
Zimbabwe will be required to re-affirm the importance of supporting and consolidating democracy, ensuring peace and
harmony, and promoting development and growth in Zimbabwe.
