Martin LeFevre: Crawling Back to the UN
Crawling Back to the UN
The self-appointed President of the World spoke to the mostly sleeping-walking citizens of America last night. Scraping his fingernails across the chalkboard of what's left of American sense and sensibility, George Bush Jr. jarringly echoed the rhetoric of John F. Kennedy with his prescription for quagmire: "We will do what is necessary, we will spend what is necessary to achieve this essential victory in the war on terror, to promote freedom, and to make our own nation more secure."
With respect to these three latest reasons for being in Iraq, first, there is no "victory" in the 'war on terror;' second, America has promoted tyranny more often than it has promoted freedom since World War II (e.g., with Saddam Hussein). Third, attacking 'them' before they attack us again is indeed at the heart of the matter where these Neanderthals are concerned.
It has been said that the Bush Administration is re-fighting the last war of the last century. But as their continual references to the defeat and rebuilding of Germany and Japan attest, they are really trying to recapture the glory days of World War II, when America actually gave a damn about the world, and wanted to help vanquished peoples build democracies and restore prosperity.
Bush says that the "civilized world is being attacked in Iraq." But no one believes that--not the Iraqis, not the Arab world, not even our friends and allies. The real rationale for Bush's irrational foreign policy is that "we fight the enemy abroad so that we do not meet him again on our own streets, in our own cities."
In a global society, that mentality is disgusting on the face of it. Moreover, the idiotic 'war on terror' is much more like the idiotic 'war on drugs' than it is like the war against Germany and Japan which may as well be a millennium ago. The very concept of war in combating such scourges insures defeat. Kill a thousand martyrs in the cause, and ten thousand will join their ranks.
The prevaricators in the Bush Administration believe terrorism is a finite quantity‹defeat it in Afghanistan and Iraq (and Korea?), and the world, or at least America, will be victorious over terrorism. That's why they almost welcome "enemies of freedom" flooding into Iraq. (Anyone who attacks a convoy of Marines is a terrorist, dumped into the same bin as the suicide psycho who blew up the UN headquarters).
Earlier in the week, Bush said, "our coalition enforced the UN resolutions in Iraq." If so, why is the Bush Administration crawling back to the United Nations, begging for a resolution to bail them out of the rat-hole they dug for themselves in Iraq?
Of course the Bush crew will never admit that waging war to obtain peace, security, democracy, and prosperity was a monumental error. Rather, they seek to give "an additional demonstration of the will of the international community."
Believing that their preemptive war was a right and just and noble cause, they insist that their wretched policy is merely "evolving." Believing that if you repeat a lie enough times it becomes truth, we are told, through complicit media shills and propaganda mills such as Fox and CNN, that India, Pakistan, Turkey, and other nations are eager to send their sons to be killed in Iraq.
The 'global war on terror' is a miserable failure, and the Bush Administration will drag down every nation and people who see the world in their repugnant terms. Will the UN, and the members of the un-coalition, provide a fig leaf for the law-of-the-jungle warmongers who are running the UN into the ground?
