Real America In Many Languages
By Daniel Patrick Welch
Introducing
http://www.danielpwelch.com
Danielpwelch.com is a site featuring the recently published works of Daniel Patrick Welch. More importantly, our current project is focused on translations into more than a dozen foreign languages. We currently have articles available in Arabic, Dutch, English, French, German, Greek, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, Ukranian and have translations pending into Bulgarian, Catalan, Chinese, Polish, Romanian, and Urdu.
The project grew from a particular article written in both English and Spanish by Welch, a writer, activist, linguist and musician who wanted to spread the word more broadly that there is an organized and active resistance in the U.S. A small ad in a translator's forum led to over 30 responses literally overnight: it seems there are a lot of pissed off people in the world who are ready to do something, anything they can, to change the path we are on.
As a measure of this success, a Ukranian translator reports that he gave both language versions to an English teacher friend. She then took them to class, so that her students could both study the English text and "see how real Americans think." Calvin Trillin, poet and in-house wit for The Nation, said that during the impeachment charade he would often sit with his wife watching "the gasbags" (as he so affectionately termed the pundit class), wonder out loud "what the American people think." After awhile, he reported, decided, "screw that--we are the American people." It is a common tactic of the Right to label as "real Americans" only those conservative, xenophobic, flag-waving minions who support their agenda. This leaves the tens of millions of us others as either "unamerican" or "unreal." Take your pick.
Global corporatism demands a global response, and getting the word out and around language barriers that there is a vibrant and organized "real America" fighting the nascent fascism, while it may only be a start, is a step toward sanity.
The site will also have links to recent radio appearances, a reciprocal links page, and perhaps an archive of newsletters we have compiled, as well as more light-hearted "Bush is a Fraud" stamps and "ILLEGITIMATE SON OF A BUSH" stickers, and so on. Please check it out! http://www.danielpwelch.com
