Winston Peters Ejected From House And Named

During Parliamentary question time moments ago New Zealand First Leader Winston Peters was "named" by Speaker Jonathan Hunt for refusing to follow a direction from the chair to leave the house.

Naming of a member is one of the most serious sanctions that can be taken against a member by the house. It will mean Winston cannot return to the house for 24 hours.

Immediately before he was named Winston Peters accused the speaker of running a "protection racket" in preventing him from making a point of order. Winston Peters was attempting to make a legal point in relation to an answer given by Minister Margaret Wilson concerning the recent Court of Appeal decision over Maori Land Court jurisdiction over customary law claims to beaches and foreshores.
