Supercomputer Weather: Hydro Lakes Rain Forecast

According to the latest NOAA Supercomputer forecast up to 60mm of precipitation will fall in the vicinity of the MacKenzie Basin in the South Island over the coming 24 hours. The Mackenzie Basin is the catchment area for the most significant Hydro storage lakes in the country.

Importantly temperatures are forecast to be high enough for the precipitation to fall in the form of rain and not snow.

Each image below shows rain in the form of coloured lines. The images are forecasts at 6 hour intervals with each one showing the precipitation forecast for the previous 6 hour period. The coloured images show sea level forecast temperatures. Lower temperatures can be expected at higher altitudes, however the temperatures are probably still mild enough for the rain not to freeze.
