NewsFlash: Iraq Accepts UN Weapons Inspectors

Published: Tue 17 Sep 2002 11:10 AM
UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has just announced that Iraq has written to him saying it is willing to accept the return of weapons inspectors unconditionally.
The return of weapons inspectors was the key demand of US President George Bush made in a speech to the UN General Assembly on September 12th. President Bush accused Iraq of flouting UN resolutions calling for weapons inspections, and said that if Iraq refused to accept inspections the US would invade, with or without UN permission.
The decision by Iraq comes hot on the heels of an announcement from Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister that the Kingdom Of Saudi Arabia is now willing to allow its bases to be used for an attack on Iraq, but only if that attack was authorised by the UN.
In addition the concession from Iraq come as the US and UK have stepped up air attacks on Iraq.
