Dear Editor,
Bouquets must surely go to the Prime Minister and the Government for showing the fortitude required in introducing the sweeping new powers to combat terrorism (Oct 30).
Commenting on safeguards relating to the changes, Mr Goff said "If you go to one extreme or the other you will either trample on rights or you will make yourself absolutely incapable of getting the information you need desperately to protect yourself against terrorist attack".
Brickbats must surely go to the same group for refusing to apply similar logic to the nations defence capabilities.
But, of course, we were in a benign environment then weren't we, and the horrors of 911 were yet to eventuate.
