Feedback: Kiwifruit Strangler

Published: Mon 20 Aug 2001 10:34 AM
Dear Editor,
Kiwifruit vines have gone "feral" and running rampant, climbing and smothering trees and sparking a big eradication programme (NZ daily 20 August).
The cause....probably birds.
It is reported the kiwifruit vines (up 20 centimetres in diameter) had taken off over the last 20 years in light native bush, in some parts growing to the top of 10metre high pine trees, and starting to eat into the trees themselves.
If this is not warning enough to the proponents of GE and GM foods of the difficulties of containing such foods until it is established whether or not there are likely to be long-term problems, what is?
