Teresa Cormack – Fatal House Fire – Prison Strike – Israel – Riwaka Murder Suicide – Whangarei Police Brutality – Maori Leaders Conference – Facial Death Trial

TERESA CORMACK: The Napier Community is waiting anxiously for a possible breakthrough in the Teresa Cormack homicide inquiry. Teresa went missing in 1987 aged six. The police and Cormack’s mother are refusing to comment.

FATAL FIRE: The Fire Service says there were no smoke alarms in a house that burned down in Northland killing a father and son. The man is said to have been living in the house without electricity out of choice.

PRISON STRIKE: The Corrections Department say that nearly 2000 members of the armed forces are ready to move into prisons in the event of industrial action. Prison Officers say they are starting a ban on administrative tasks today. The officers say they are concerned that they may be suspended.

ISRAEL: Israelis and Palestinians have clashed in the last 48 hours. A Palestinian gunman opened up with a gun outside a Tel Aviv army post injuring several people. He later died after being shot. Later in the day a 25-year-old Palestinian was killed when his car was rocketed by an Israeli helicopter.

RIWAKA MURDER SUICIDE: Victim support and counsellors will be at Riwaka school today to deal with the apparent murder-suicide of a father and his two daughters.

WHANGAREI POLICE BRUTALITY: The Whangarei Police are investigating claims that two Hokianga men were beaten and pepper sprayed while handcuffed in custody in the Whangarei Police station. Meanwhile a 50-year-old man has also complained about sadistic treatment in the station.

MAORI LEADERS CONFERENCE: A two day gathering to promote leadership skills among young Maori begins in Wellington today. The Young Maori Leaders Conference will be opened by Minister Parekura Horomia. The two day think-tank is described as an opportunity to deal with the real issues.

FACIAL DEATH TRIAL: A man charged with the manslaughter of a woman during a facial treatment session with Exoderm begins today.
