BREAKING NEWS

Radio Promotion Questioned

* RADIO 3PBS FM in St Kilda (Vic.) was receiving $3 from every voucher booklet sold in a promotion, covered in a Geelong Advertiser article headlined 'Ad Firm Caught In Phone Scam Fears'. MICHAEL HADE, of Brisbane-based Merchant Sampler Advertising, said his firm contacted about 5000 homes a day, offering a booklet containing $5500 worth of free food, entertainment, services and gifts. Consumers pay $88 for the book. KYLIE OLIVER, of The Geelong Advertiser, says several local readers were alarmed at the company's telemarketing, in which they were said to have been told they had been selected to 'win' the groceries. The Geelong News suburban paper, also published by COLIN DUCK, was mentioned in a call: 'A South Geelong resident - who lives alone - said a caller claiming to represent The Geelong News had phoned her on Wednesday evening to say she had won a competition in the newspaper.'

* NATASHA MULLER of Merchant Sampler Advertising said 'all its staff signed an agreement to stick to a prepared script and were instructed to speak in a slow, clear manner'. The company says it has 'suffered lost business and grief because people were now unfairly sceptical of the offer'.

BREAKING NEWS

News 'Reeling': South Sydney Decision

* JOHN HARTIGAN, Chief Executive Officer of News Limited, says his company 'did not set out to target Souths or any particular club' when it, as a National Rugby League 50 per cent partner, excluded the South Sydney club from the League. Headline writers for The Australian Financial Review Weekend Edition said RUPERT MURDOCH'S company was 'reeling' from the Federal Court 2-1 Full Bench judgement that the club was wrongly excluded from a streamlined 14-team competition. ANNABEL HEPWORTH and BERNARD O'RIORDAN of The Fin report that Seven Network boss KERRY STOKES will honour a $3 million sponsorship pldege, made through his Australian Capital Equity business. ROY MASTERS of The Sydney Morning Herald lists the STOKES generosity at $1 million. The Fairfax paper also has an extra dig at MURDOCH: 'In a further blow for the NRL and News Ltd, damages could be awarded to Souths when the matter goes back to the trial judge for an assessment of the club's losses'.

* NEIL CHENOWETH, who could be excused as being regarded as The Fin's correspondent with a weekly anti-MURDOCH instalment, wrote that it would have been the News Ltd executive 'wearing the asbestos clothing' who had the job of telling RUPERT about Friday's Court judgement. 'One can summarise News Ltd's version of Super League history under the heading 'It Wasn't LACHLAN'S Fault. There is a lot of truth in this. LACHLAN (MURDOCH) was just 23 years old, and some five months into his first job, at that first confused meeting, where the players managed to sign the wrong pieces of paper. But the pressure to find culprits for Super League, and the ascension of LACHLAN, has seen the departure of News Ltd's long-time chief KEN COWLEY and his natural successor, BOB MUSCAT. ROD EDDINGTON was supposed to run News after LACHLAN went to New York. His departure left PETER MACOURT as the only senior News Ltd executive with significant financial and business expertise ... The court decision on Friday puts MACOURT in the spotlight again ...'

Promotions At News Ltd.

* PETER MACOURT has been appointed Chief Operating Officer for News Ltd. A statement in Saturday's Adelaide Advertiser said: 'MR MACOURT, who joined the company in 1983, is a former Chief Financial Officer. He became Deputy Chief Executive in 1998.

* 'MALCOLM NOAD, who began his career with News Ltd in its advertising department in 1973, has been appointed Managing Director of Nationwide News, publisher of The Australian, The Daily Telegraph and The Sunday Telegraph. He will also chair the new consumer contact service News-Advantage.

* 'JERRY HARRIS, a former advertising sales executive with Times Newspapers in London, will become Managing Director of Queensland Newspapers. MR HARRIS, who moved to Australia in 1991, was previously Managing Director of News Ltd unit MAPT.'

SCB's John Laws: Offer To Help Hanson

* JOHN LAWS, just re-signed by Southern Cross Broadcasting to 2UE for 5½ years, made headlines on Friday with his offer to 'personally' help One Nation leader PAULINE HANSON. LAWS: 'Did You cry last night?' HANSON: 'I was pretty upset.' LAWS: 'I'll bet. Were you by yourself last night?' HANSON: 'I had my children'. LAWS: 'OK, Pauline. As I said before, if this is politics thank God I'm not in it. It's a tough world and I think that ...' HANSON: 'That's why we've got to change it.' LAWS: 'Yes, we have, we have. Anyway, if I can help you in any way personally, all you've got to do is yell.' HANSON: 'John, I thank you very much and it's good to talk to you.' LAWS: 'Nice to talk to you, Pauline. Bye.'

* BOB GORDON, Editor-in-Chief of The Gold Coast Bulletin, made his own 'Sister Act' headlines on Saturday with a front-page story as 'PAULINE'S big sister JUDY defends 'our very honest family'.' Press Gang

* RICHARD MACEY had a top yarn in Saturday's SMH about Universal Press including fictitious streets in its Sydney UBD Street Directory, designed to trap people who illegally copy its maps, breaching copyright. A Fair Trading spokesman said the matter was not considered a breach of consumer laws and action would not be taken.

* JENI PORTER and ANNE DAVIES put together a vintage Fairfax yarn about KERRY PACKER on Saturday: 'It sounds apocryphal but it could just be true: when JAMES PACKER asked his father what his punishment would be for losing about $400 million in the collapse of One.Tel, KERRY replied: 'I'm not going to die yet.' In a breathless top-of-page-three story, the reporters also noted JAMES has taken up smoking 'with a vengeance'. 'It's really disgusting being in meetings with them,' said one non-smoking executive. Yeah, sure ... the SMH job on the ACP family continued in its News Review section with ELISABETH SEXTON'S page-piece with the tease: 'JAMES PACKER'S strategy of making deals with his old school mates is making some stock market analysts nervous.' Of course, the yarn included the disclaimer - 'One stockbroking analyst, who did not want to be named - no-one does, when it concerns the PACKERS - told The Herald ...'

The Local Report

* WILLIAM VERITY, Editor of the Fairfield City Champion (Fairfax, NSW), has been appointed as Editor of The Blacktown Sun and The Parramatta Sun. The Fairfield paper has just celebrated its 10th anniversary; it was an expansion from the Liverpool City Champion.

Glass House

* PAN McMILLAN published a small apology to VERSACE, hidden in The Weekend Australian: 'PAN McMILLAN has been advised that substantial portions of a book that it had planned to publish, The Spying Game by FRANK MONTE, are false and unsubstantiated. Specifically, there is no truth to the allegation that the late GIANNI VERSACE was involved in the laundering of Mafia money or had connections to the Mafia. In light of these developments, PAN McMILLAN has cancelled publication of the book and recalled all copies. PAN McMILLAN apologises unreservedly to the Versace companies and the VERSACE family for publishing these false allegations.'

* ROBERT BOLTON, of The Australian Financial Review Weekend Edition, wrote: 'On August 1, the ABC will launch the first new free-to-air TV channel in Australia since SBS in 1980.' What about MCTC-31, Melbourne; CTS-31, Sydney; Briz 31, Brisbane; Access TV, Perth; and ACE-TV 6, Adelaide?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------

Editor's E-Mail

* FLEUR BROWN, Broadcast Communications Manager of the Seven Network, writes: 'Dear Ash, In response to your story on the Community TV/Ashes issue (Media Flash Confidential, Wed., July 4), your readers may care to know that Seven is also disappointed that community television coverage of the first session of the Ashes cannot proceed in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney markets. We are pleased that coverage can still proceed in Adelaide and Perth - which we have worked very hard to achieve over the last few weeks.

* 'SEVEN has tried for a number of months to secure a free-to-air television partner to cover the first session of the Ashes. When ABC & SBS declined this offer, we put the opportunity to commercial television stations in Perth, Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Unfortunately, we hit a legal snag with this on late Monday afternoon. Seven received external legal advice that we were in potential breach of the Trade Practices Act if we provided broadcast rights in markets covered by pay TV station, C7. This is because the words 'exclusive coverage' were used in an Optus program guide, in reference to the C7 broadcast. (in other words, new C7 subscribers may have signed up based on an expectation that the first session of the Ashes would be shown exclusively on C7).

* 'SEVEN has used its best endeavours to get this partnership to move ahead in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne. In fact, our technical people were working right up until Monday afternoon to assist community stations to resolve any technical issues in each state.'

Stix And Stones

* STEVE STICKNEY, Editor at The Manly Daily, examines heavenly heads:

* 'Police stoned in inner city riot' - one way of dealing with missile-hurling youths in down-town Waterloo. Daily Tele.

* 'Church seeks new Peter' - ribald take on the Anglican Church's search for a replacement for leader Archbishop PETER HOLLINGWORTH, who was about to be sworn in as Australia's new Governor-General. Daily Tele.

* 'Charles and Camilla establish new pecking order' - the first public kiss between PRINCE CHARLES and CAMILLA PARKER BOWLES arouses barely a ripple of public outrage/interest. The Australian.

* 'Pleased to meter you' - local councils are expected to reap a $30m windfall after being handed responsibility for parking fines. Sun-Herald.

* 'Sex Act a challenge for Goward' - umm, new Sex Discrimination Commissioner PRU GOWARD'S appointment failed to create a climax for some commentators. The Oz.

* 'Too good by `Alf' - veteran halfback ALLAN 'ALFIE' LANGER, recalled from England at the age of 34, leads Queensland to a crushing series win in rugby league's State of Origin decider. Sydney Morning Herald.

* 'Penis patient `short-changed' ' - WAYNE COLLINGS is suing his cosmetic surgeon because his penis enlargement operation left him 3cm worse off. The Oz.

* $1.2 MILLION: the amount requested in American Express letters-of-demand to One.Tel former MD JODEE RICH, Finance Director MARK SILBERMAN, and Operations Manager KEVIN BECK. TONY BOYD of The Australian Financial Review Weekend edition says: 'Under the terms of the charge card contracts, the three men are personally liable for the amounts owed on the cards.' 3AW's Rumourfile, conducted by breakfast show hosts ROSS STEVENSON and JOHN BURNS, heard late last week that one of the sidebars to One.Tel charging many accounts to a small number of credit cards was the accumulation of Frequent Flyer points. 'It is not known whether the reward points earned on the One.Tel corporate charge cards went to One.Tel or the executives involved,' notes BOYD.

* $25 MILLION: amount to be pumped into the Victorian economy with the filming of the Bonanza prequel - Ponderosa - at a leased property in Daylesford.

Bottom Line

* HUGH MACKAY writes in The West Australian: 'According to a recent newspaper report, the most advertised product in Australia, with a monthly budget of some $20 million, is not Coca-Cola or Toyota, but the HOWARD Government.'
