Media Flash and Australian Media Job Directory

Australia's Media Independent Weekly E-Newspaper

Monday, January 29, 2001

BREAKING NEWS - SUNDAY, JANUARY 28, 2001

Real Spin On Extra Dailies

* JOHN HARTIGAN'S bold move, as Australian News Limited chief, to give the multi-million dollar go-ahead to free afternoon tabloid commuter newspapers in Melbourne and possibly Sydney, is a stunning commercial attack against rival John Fairfax Holdings, and its Chief Executive FRED HILMER.

* JULIAN CLARKE, Managing Director of the Melbourne News Limited division (Herald & Weekly Times Ltd), caught Fairfax by surprise late during the week, with his company's release of marketing material promoting the project to major ad agencies in Melbourne. CLARKE'S team plan to start the new Melbourne afternoon paper - dubbed Melbourne Extra or MX - as a free full-color 32-page weekday paper, with a 60,000 print run, in February. Full-page ads are to sell at a casual rate of $4500; watch that rate fall quickly to half that price.

* COL ALLAN, Daily Telegraph Editor-in-Chief, may soon follow with his own SX - Sydney Extra tabloid. The Sydney product would hit at ALAN REVELL'S Sydney Morning Herald, as well as the career ad market largely held by MICHAEL HANNAN'S Nine To Five, Sydney Weekly and City Weekly.

* GREG HYWOOD, who is taking over as Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of The Age from STEVE HARRIS, has countered that Fairfax is able to match News quickly with a free PM commuter daily ... but the real position is not that simple at all. HWT can push the button on a full-color 32-page paper instantly at its Todd Road, Fishermans Bend presses ... The Age is still waiting to commission its Tullamarine plant in 12 months' time, and may have to rely on outsourcing the costly job to BOB MUSCAT'S PMP (Argus) plant at Hawthorn. ANDREW HORNERY (SMH) reported on Saturday that PETER KLAGES, Illawarra Newspapers GM, is 'believed to have been called on to implement Fairfax's response to MX.'

Spoiler Unsettles Spencer St

* JULIAN CLARKE'S confirmation on Thursday that News Ltd will soon launch the free Melbourne afternoon commuter paper has already unsettled marketing troops at the Spencer Street headquarters of The Age. Fairfax chief FRED HILMER saw fit to remove STEVE HARRIS from his $505,000-a-year top post when HARRIS refused to move to the Sydney Morning Herald. HILMER has also promoted Age 2-i-c JOHN ALLAN sideways to a Sydney post, leaving the Melbourne broadsheet team somewhat demoralised. The News Ltd announcement comes as both companies have announced a freeze on staff appointments.

* JOHN HARTIGAN, News Ltd CEO, is expected to fund the afternoon dailies in the longer term from the PM-edition budgets. For example, sometime after the MX launch, if ad levels are sufficient, it is expected that the afternoon edition of PETER BLUNDEN'S Herald Sun would be 'incorporated' into MX. The PM edition has sales of about 60,000, which are largely CBD and inner-Melbourne based, and is expensive to produce and distribute. GREG HYWOOD does not have such a budget luxury at The Age.

* JULIAN CLARKE'S early career in the tough streets of free suburban newspapers should not be forgotten. CLARKE started as a 16-year-old at Standard Newspapers in Melbourne, publishers of weekly papers in Frankston, Clayton, Springvale, bayside and eastern suburbs. In 1986 he became General Manager of The Herald and Weekly Times' newspaper division, and MD of the company in 1991. He was raised on making tough free ad-sheets work on a shoestring.

* HYWOOD'S financial situation at The Age is further complicated by the Age Melbourne Property Guide, a 160,000-circulation glossy free weekly give-away estimated to have lost almost $2 million in its first year. One answer may be to badge any Age afternoon daily tabloid, as another Age edition, to pump its daily sales figures from 190,000 to 250,000 for retail and national advertisers, as well as promoting Age classified lineage to readers.

More Problems At The Age

* GREG HYWOOD arrives as Age Publisher with a number of immediate challenges:

* FIRST is the almost stagnant Age circulation. A self-serving internal Age document assures management that 'our circulation is at sustainable levels'. Weekday circulation is at 194,640. Saturday Age circulation figures have been falling significantly.

* SECONDLY, the industrial situation at The Age is fragile. Melbourne workplace problems have been met with Sydney counterpoints. Some senior Sydney-based Fairfax executives have seemed unable to appreciate the cultural and commercial differences between the NSW and Victorian markets. This led to The Age missing two important editions through dramatic strike action in 2000.

* THIRDLY, the launch of MX throws down an instant gauntlet to whether HYWOOD can instantly harness Age staffers and their loyalty. His arrival is as The Age re-commences some discounted subscription drives; the re-modelling as Education Age as a $57-a-year opt-in product only; and the re-launch of Epicure as a tabloid. An important and much needed re-launch of The Sunday Age as a tabloid, said to have been scheduled for March, is now said to have been 'put on hold'.

* FOURTHLY, the heavy losses of Melbourne Property Guide - established primarily as an opponent to ERIC BEECHER'S Melbourne Weekly Magazine - need to be quickly stemmed. That publication could be closed (or sold) as soon as the the first quarter of 2001. The title of MPG may find itself in the hands of SHANE HIGGS' Metropolis Media which takes over The City Weekly, The Melbourne Times and Emerald Hill Times, from this Thursday (Feb. 1). City Weekly will have to fight hard to retain its 22-pages of employment advertising, which make the 50,000-circulation paper a viable proposition. MX and Express will go hard after this market segment.

BREAKING NEWS

Sydney Radio Wars

* JOHN FORDHAM, manager of 2UE's JOHN LAWS, says there is no Sydney radio war starting today. He quotes LAWS' 2UE ratings of 13.7, compared to 2GB's 3.5. 'Who is the radio war between?' he asked, when interviewed by the Sydney Morning Herald's CYNTHIA BANHAM. 2GB starts with a line-up of PHILIP CLARK (breakfasts), TERRY WILLESEE (mornings), KERRI-ANNE KENNERLEY (afternoon) and GRAHAM RICHARDSON (drive). 2GB Program Director CHRIS SMITH says CLARK'S program is formatted so the first 18 minutes of every half hour are commercial free, in a bid to attract ABC listeners whose breakfast program is now hosted by the able ANGELA CATTERNS.

* TREVOR LONG (no relation) of Candela Enterprises is developing the 2GB and 2SM web-sites. GB is impressive, including web cameras in each of two studios. Sydney's Daily Telegraph says: 'Two of the webcams are perched in Studios One and Three ... but intriguingly, images of Studio Three disappear between midday and 3pm. Confidential would have thought that shift's presenter would be far more comfortable with the camera than her male colleague. Apparently not ...'

* KERRI-ANNE KENNERLEY reveals contracts with 'Imedeen', 'Trimit' and Toyota in 2GB's commercial agreement register. GRAHAM RICHARDSON drives a City Ford, and has a contract with KERRY PACKER to 'write for magazines, appear on television stations, advise, consult and lobby for all of his interests, as required'. Mid-yawner ANDREW HARWOOD reveals he receives consideration over $100,000 from D&D Advertising to 'attend client meetings, take advertising briefs and formulate and write commercials. Presentation and voice over commercials. Presentation of Mid-Dawn radio program including advertorials.'

Objective Journalism 101

* PETER MANDELSON'S resignation as Britain's Minister for Northern Ireland, in TONY BLAIR'S Labor Government, was treated this way by the London Sun late last week: "Mandelson's out on his ear again because he is a lying, manipulative, oily, two-faced, nasty piece of work who should never have been allowed back into the government."

In Defence Of Christopher Skase

* TONY WHITING'S Border Mail (Albury) carried a reader's letter on Saturday, where 'DAWN ENDRESZ' writes: 'His democratic right of presumption of innocence until proven guilty, once again in this country, has been nullified and completely blown out of the water. No wonder he doesn't want to return, jutsic is only a mirage.'

* NET GUIDE (NZ) has won an interim injunction forcing rival Net Magazine to change its name, according to SIMON HENDERY of The New Zealand Herald. The four-year old Net Guide successfully stopped distribution of its A5 $3.50 rival, which it said was so similar that it was confusing shoppers and costing it sales. * LARRY KING may be on the way out from his CNN 9pm-10pm timeslot, according to the frankness of the New York Daily News: 'King Larry is an institution, but he's expensive. His ratings are down. And he skews old.'

* MARK FRANKEL, Executive Editor of Offspring and Dads, explains their closure in this E-mail: 'We proved we could produce a great magazine, and everyone who saw it, both inside and outside the industry, agreed. Unfortunately, the plan was always to finance Dads like a dot.com and to recapitalise the company around the time of the fourth issue. Unfortunately, investment trends and the general economic climate are working hard around us and none of the money men (and we've hit just about all of 'em) will dig their hands out of their pockets. We're still convinced our idea was great; unfortunately, our timing was not. Shit."

* AOL TIME WARNER will close three titles - the 954,383-circulation Today's Homeowner, Senior Golfer and Outdoor Explorer. Some 40 staffers get the shaft.

Quadrant

In December's Quadrant magazine:

Mark Latham MP on Globalisation's optimists and pessimists - Greg Melleuish reviews Blainey's History of the World - Alan Gill on Britain under the Jackboot: occupied Jersey 60 years ago - Sean Regan on our post-modern Pilger - Peter Ryan defends the reputation of the judge who sent Ned Kelly to the gallows - the final instalment of Keith Windschuttle's analysis of Aborigine massacres, and the lies of the missionaries - Sophie Masson on Harry Potter - new poems by Les Murray and others.

Quadrant is a magazine that has always been identified with searching out the truth, making sure that one orthodoxy is not mistakenly replaced with another. One of the great roles of Quadrant has been its questioning of political correctness. And when I reflect . on the idleness of so many in academia and, despite some notable and well-known exceptions, on the shameful assault on the reputation of Geoffrey Blainey, you will have in mind the sorts of things that I think are relevant to the role of Quadrant. - John Howard, Prime Minister of Australia.

Gives You Back Control

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now Canberra has declassified the file, we are free to publish the entire Trewistle saga. One or two episodes may seem familiar. Ask yourself: "Did I miss something really insignificant?"

Trewistle Pushes The Envelope

* NASDAQ darling Trewistle Technology has punched its way into the lucrative home delivery business with a stunning new concept - the virtual postman.

* Now, instead of simply opening the boring old e-mail, it will be presented on your screen by a cyberpostie, with a cheery greeting of "Morning", "Hope this isn't from the ATO", or "That dog of yours should be put down."

* The new TREWISTLE character, who will appear in a top right window whenever you press "Get Mail", comes in a small range of genders, skin colours and uniforms. (I quite like Natalie, who has an air-sea rescue flak jacket and purple lurex boots. She looks about 18).

* Cyberpostie only costs 15 cents per delivery, compared to 45c for a letter through Australia Post. "But the real benefit of the Cyberpostie," explained creator MILTON TREWISTLE, "is in the security area.

* "With a flick of her throttle, Cyberpostie consigns spam straight to the bin, adding a couple of entertaining viruses to discourage further junk mailings.

* "If somebody is spamming you porn, Cyberpostie will download it before it bothers you and pass it to the relevant fence. There is no charge for this part of the service, which I personally supervise with Adrian and Narelle."

* Cyberpostie "learns" about people from whom you do not wish to hear, and automatically takes a trip back down the signal to present a series of facial contortions, finger gestures and abuse on the sender's screen.

* "That'll stun 'em," TREWISTLE growled.

* All in all, Trewistle Technology's latest brainchild seems set to inflame the bourses. Hollywood rumours persist that Trewistle is negotiating the rights to use computer-generated look-alike big star Cyberposties who will deliver the mail with songs from their chart hits.

* "The possibilities beggar the imagination," commented the creator. "They've certainly beggared mine."

Movers And Shakers

* PAUL MORGAN, who the Gold Coast Bulletin described at the weekend as a 'flamboyant Queensland businessman', died on Friday while playing a game of golf with his wife SUE-ELLEN. MORGAN was founder of the Brisbane Broncos, and was an investor in PAUL HOGAN'S Crocodile Dundee movie.

* SALLY HEATH has been appointed Saturday Extra Editor at The Age. MARK FORBES has been appointed Foreign Affairs and Defence correspondent in the paper's Canberra Bureau. SOPHIE DOUEZ has been assigned to the Canberra Bureau as a reporter, from where MELISSA MARINO will return in March as a Sunday Age reporter.

The Local Report

* ROSS McPHERSON, Editor-in-Chief of The Shepparton News group, featured in Friday's classifieds with a sizeable ad - including three 'Changing Faces' file photos titled 'Satisfaction, Anticipation, Respectable' - with love from BLAIR, CAMPBELL, ELLA and ROHAN. The ad celebrates ROSS' 50th Birthday.

* Reminds us of an after-lunch episode wayback when Chadstone Progress ad man NOEL JACKSON inserted a last-minute ad congratulating members of Leader Newspapers' MOTT FAMILY on their birthdays. JACKSON'S misfired prank soon saw him working at PETER ISAACSON'S Sunday Observer.

Glass House

* REX GARDNER'S Hobart Mercury still has those down-home morsels that make Tassie unique. Take this ad from Saturday's Merc: 'I, DOROTHY FISHER, of Campbell Town, shopkeeper, unreservedly apologise to the lessees and staff of the Man O'Ross Hotel for maliciously spreading rumors that I suffered food poisoning as a result of eating a meal at the hotel.'

* ROD SCOTT, Editor at Launceston's Examiner, is not giving away all the promotion budget in one swoop. Thumping color banner above Saturday's masthead says readers can win $300, in a contest where $150 jackpots daily. Our copy of The Ex, purchased in Melbourne, was early in the print run: it carries a number of '588'. 'To claim the cash, you must present the masthead of The Examiner newspaper with the winning lucky number and correct date to The Examiner in Launceston.' Hardly worth the drive.

* DERRYN HINCH says he tried a STEVE VIZARD impersonation when he opened his 3AK morning program with a gruff 'Good Evening'. HINCH, the headline machine, had a nerve pinched by the Daily Tele's 'Sydney Confidential team who chided him about the line. HINCH fired back an E-mail to PETER HOLDER and JO CASAMENTO: 'Didn't your gormless correspondent also point out that I came on air and said 'good evening' in the voice of STEVE VIZARD'S HINCH-lampooning HUNCH character on Fast Forward? I, and whatever listeners I have, obviously got up much earlier than your breathless fizz.' The tabloid two replied: 'Cutting edge. That VIZARD routine is a decade old.'

FIRST MULTI-NATIONAL E-BOOK A South African computer expert and an Australian writer have published what they believe is the world's first multi-national electronic book. The free book, "Life Begins at Eighty ... On the Internet" by veteran Sydney journalist Eric Shackle, is posted on Barry Downs's Kimberley Web site, http://www.bdb.co.za/shackle/ebook.htm linked to other sites in the United States, England, Scotland, Australia and Bangladesh. Articles from the various sites cover a grab-bag of topics: the world's biggest turkey and largest hailstones, computer-generated anagrams, mysterious lights in Texas and Queensland, 15 towns named Rugby, Global English, and how to cultivate a herb said to ease arthritic pains. "Like most of my generation, I used to regard the Internet as a fearsome monster rapidly devouring the world we knew," 81-year-old Shackle says in the introduction. " Then at the age of 79, I bought my first computer, studied David Pogue's hilarious book The i-Mac for Dummies, and began a new life. Captivated by the magic of the World Wide Web, I began writing freelance articles about my discoveries. Some of them have been published by the New York Times, the Globe and Mail (Toronto, Canada), the Straits Times (Singapore) and the Sydney Morning Herald (Australia) ... "Read some of my articles [which] I hope will inspire other retirees to join the world's largest library, and share its magical allure."

Editor's E-Mail

* DAVID PALMER writes: 'Dear Ash, As a Victorian native, I grew fond of the original ICPOTA creation. Resident in Sydney for the last eight years, currently with Reed Business in Chatswood, I'd like to see the character Sydneyised within the Fairfax fold. How about ICPOTH? Then the Herald could run something like "EFTPOS your advertisement ICPOTH." Or ICPOTSM has a competitve ring to it. Best wishes for Media Flash in 2001. David Palmer. * PS. Interested to see news of HARTLEY HIGGINS, an old acquaintance from days when I farmed in the mountains between Mt Buller and Mt Buffalo. His father had a beautiful Bentley cloverleaf car, circa 1920s, which he habitually drove around Wangaratta every Saturday morning in the 1960s and maybe earlier, for recreation. The cloverleaf tag referred to the plan view of the rear seats.

* JIM JAMES, General Manager at IPMG, Haymarket, is one of the extraordinary number of new subscribers to Media Flash. So too has NARTIRA CARLSON, Diary Editor at Australian Associated Press; JOHN OLB, Director/Producer, thousand Word Productions.

Pasquarelli's Politics

* JOHN PASQUARELLI writes: 'This morning I dialled Citibank telephone banking, groaning at the thought of puching buttons and listening to the interminable, infuriating prompts. This time I was told to punch 1 for English, 2 for Cantonese and 3 for Mandarin. English is our national language, the language of international business and the lingua franca of the Internet yet we are now pandering to minority ethnic interests once again. It should be mandatory for newcomers to Australia to have a basic fluency in English - or be compelled to attend English lessons. My father used to come home at Ingham in North Queensland as a young boy after school and teach his parents English - at no cost to taxpayers - how times have changed.'

Long Shots

By Ash Long, Publisher, Media Flash

* JOHN ANDERSON, Deputy Prime Minister, seems to take himself a little too seriously in correspondence to The Australian. In one breath, he accuses commentator MARK DAY on not getting it right in a story about the Deputy PM and Moree Champion Editor JOHN BALL. Next, ANDERSON admits: 'For the record, that conversation was a heated one ... to then suggest that I later 'threatened' BALL is utterly wrong. BALL stated that his coverage of federal issues would be fair, and I simply said I would be watching to see if he lived up to his word.'

* ELLEN WHINNETT, journalist at REX GARDNER'S Mercury (Hobart, Tas.), had incoming and outgoing mobile phone call numbers traced by Police - without a Police warrant having to be obtained. The Australian's BRIAN WOODLEY reports that WHINNETT broke a number of stories, embarrassing to Tasmanian Police chief RICHARD McCREADIE.

* NICOLE BLAND, recent 3AW-Southern Cross sports presenter, was heard with DERRYN HINCH on 3AK on Friday.

* NICKY BUCKLEY, former Nine Network Sale Of The Century good-looker, is another Melbourne celebrity to drive a free Volvo from Bilia Hawthorn. Her 'Bilia Test Drive' was featured by LEIGH KILDAY in ANTHONY McDONALD'S Melbourne Weekly Magazine.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Media Money

* $32,909 is starting package for a part-time Graphics/Web Information Officer (36.25 hours - that's part-time?) at Legal Aid Queensland. pdf@legalaid.qld.gov.au

* $95,920 is offered for the Queensland University of Technology Professor in Journalism and New Media appointment at the Gardens Point campus. jobs@qut.edu.au

* $16 MILLION is the rumored price for Optus to broadcast this year's National Rugby League competition. Foxtel, Austar and the Nine Network also broadcast NRL.

* $A73.9 BILLION is the value of the Sky Global digital business, part of the News Corporation business. RUPERT MURDOCH says the business may now not be floated.

Bottom Line

* SEVEN NETWORK have won the exclusive broadcasting rights for the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. The Nine Network has the rights to the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.

* RUPERT MURDOCH'S News Corporation announces its second quarter fiscal 2001 results at 12.30am on Thursday, February 8, 2001, and simultaneously in New York.

The Last Word

* MIKE CARLTON, of The Sydney Morning Herald, describes PIERS AKERMAN as The Daily Telegraph's 'hysteric-in-residence' over a piece describing the fate of illegal immigrants: 'If they need to be drugged, hand-cuffed or placed in chains before being bundled onto aircraft, it really doesn't matter.'

P.S.

* DERRYN HINCH, 3AK morning host, had an online barney with Right-to-Life warhorse MARGARET TIGHE this week. Both sounded 20 years past their prime. HINCH was strong about voluntary euthanasia. How does that sit with 3AK half-owner Fusion Media, headed by MAL GARVIN, who even banned Crown Casino advertising on his station.
