Flax weaving making a difference
In the heart of the city there’s a workshop with a difference.
Vincents Art Workshop in the Victoria Arcade (opposite the public library) is a dynamic art space where anyone get creative. On Tuesdays Vicents offers a free tutored workshops.
Today half a dozen students were trying their hands at flax weaving. Tutor Makere Love was showing students how to make small flax baskets.
While people were learning about flax weaving others around the studio were working on different projects. Some were painting, other were carving stone or working with clay. Paints and materials, including stone and clay, are provided free of charge. There is also a dark room which can be used for a small cost.
The main workroom is light and airy and is surrounded with sculptures, paintings and other artistic works. All the pieces are originals and there some amazing items on display. The paintings done using house paint are worth a mention. Many of the works are for sale and a displayed at the entrance to the workshop. Vincents also has regular exhibitions at Mono Cafe.
Next weeks workshop is paper-making using flax and other natural fibres. Co-Co- Glen McDonald says they often try to reuse and recycle products. She says they try to introduce people as many different media as possible.
