BREAKING NEWS
Council Chaos In Adelaide
* TOM MILOSEVIC'S Messenger Newspapers Group put South Australia's local government into chaos with an investigation that found many of the Councils were not properly formed. TOM SULLIVAN reported in the Portside Messenger that 12 Councillors and Mayor JOHANNA McLUSKEY were invalid members of the Port Adelaide Enfield Council as they had failed to lodge a form with their business and financial details by a July 3 deadline. They had to be reinstated by an order from JUDGE MICHAEL BOWERING of the District Court.
* CHARMAINE NEWTON reported in the Guardian Messenger that eight of West Torrens 15 elected members lost their positions. JAMES QUAST of The Weekly Times Messenger told of 13 members losing their positions at Charles Sturt Council. DAVID WESOLOWSKI of Leader Messenger revealed eight Tea Tree Gully Councillors lost their seats because of the bungle. STACY FARRAR of the Southern Times Messenger pointed to 13 of Onkaparinga Council's 20 members who faced the sack. JENNY HULLICK summed it up in the Eastern Courier Messenger: 'Messenger Newspapers reports have revealed a litany of errors and sloppiness surrounding the registers.' Probably one of Australia's local news stories of the year.
Seven Hits At 3AW
* DAVID ASPINALL'S Seven Melbourne is reportedly at odds with leading Melbourne radio station 3AW after on-air criticisms of the TV station's news broadcasters DAVID JOHNSTON and ANNE FULWOOD. CLAIRE HEANEY of the Herald Sun reports that HSV-7 withdrew advertising after stinging criticism, in the light of dismal ratings following the Olympic Games. Media reported that Channel Seven's news team was told to shape up, after ratings fell drastically when the Games concluded. Viewers returned quickly to National Nine News, under supremo JOHN SORELL, with presenter PETER HITCHENER. Nine also bounced back this past week with a $1 million viewer promotion headed on-air by CATRIONA ROWNTREE.
* The reported dispute comes as the large frame of Aspinall was seen moving across the screen of Channel 10's new Rove Live program, as host ROVE McMANUS had a televised phone call with Channel 7's security guard at the Dorcas Street headquarters of KERRY STOKES' station. Will 3AW counter with an increased co-operation with other TV news operations in Melbourne? Will 3AW listeners start to hear Channel 10 newsreaders MAL WALDEN and JENNIFER HANSEN on important breakfast news bulletins, as the early shift is revamped with the departure of presenter ROSS STEVENSON'S co-host DEAN BANKS?
'Our Lauren Burns'
* WAYNE BITTNER, Editor-in-Chief of Melbourne's Leader Newspapers, has a team that was suitably impressed by Olympian LAUREN BURNS' gold medal for taekwando. His Diamond Valley News front-page described the 26-year-old as 'Eltham's Lauren Burns'. His Northcote Leader front-page billed her as 'Fairfield favourite Lauren Burns'. The Preston Post-Times front-page had to settle for 'local favourite'.
Brisbane TV 'Revolt'
* 'TAMARA TONITE', Brisbane drag celebrity, faces a 'cripping legal bill and the possible loss of her show in the aftermath of the battle at television station Briz 31,' according to VICTORIA TAYLOR-SCOTT of Brother Sister's Queensland Edition. The article says 'Tonite' and associates face a $16,000 bill from a Supreme Court action, after unsuccessfully attempting to dismiss the management committee of the station. The 'rebels' say they are angered that the station 'is axing locally produced content', with a claim that station has 14 religious shows on the channel'. They claim that four of the seven members of the station's management committee are members of the World Harvest Congregation Christian group.
* DISCLOSURE: Media Flash is published by ASH LONG MEDIA, which also produces The Brisbane Report TV Program, broadcast on Briz 31. We are not involved with any of the disagreements reported upon.
Fair Trading Law Widens To News
* RENE RIVKIN'S run-in with the Australian Securities and Investment Commission over The Rivkin Report brings implications for publishers and journalists offering business and investment advice and analysis (Media Flash, October 9). CHERELLE MURPHY'S article in The Australian Financial Review Weekend Edition (Oct. 14-15) also gives rise to Fair Trading Act legislation being used against publications, in a variety of circumstances.
* GANESH SAHATHEVAN, journalist, had sent E-Mails to Australian and Malaysian journalists over conduct alleged by VINCENT TAN CHEE YIOUN, chief of Car Lovers Carwash, and its Malaysian parent company. The company took action under NSW Fair Trading law in the Supreme Court; an injunction was lifted on Friday by JUSTICE DAVID LEVINE. NSW Fair Trading Minister JOHN WATKINS, briefed by the Australian Press Council, intervened to support the journalist: 'I have no wish to see any fair trading legislation used against journalists doing legitimate journalistic work.'
Media Alert Diary: 'Free Service'
* PETER LLOYD, www.mediaalert.com.au, tells Media Flash of his new web site for PR and event planners to inform media of critical events. CATHERINE MILLS is listed as 'media contact' on a news release that announces: 'This free service run by journalists and researchers, Media Alert Diary, is a direct and trusted pathway to media and provides a new method of communicating directly with media decision-makers.'
* HOW 'FREE' is Media Alert? Our visit to the site required a password, with a 'click here' for 'free limited access'. There was none.
* LLOYD'S web-site did however offer 'several flexible payment options', with a 32kb Agreement and a 24kb Order Form, involving a five-page contract with 'Downunder Media Fixers Pty Limited ... trading as Media Alert Diary (referred to herein as 'MAD').'

Historic 'Lansdowne Park Farm' Country Holidays and Vineyard is Goulburn's oldest homestead and earliest farming complex ... and is now home to city folk wanting to get away from it all, and see a touch of old-fashioned country life, and show their children what farm life is all about.
Accommodation is in the old servants' cottages at Lansdowne, faithfully restored to self-contained cottages with modern facilities including electric blankets, sweep fans, open log fires ... plys your own backyard and barbecue.
Mums and Dads can walk among the 175-year pine trees and listen to the bird life, play tennis, check out the games room for tennis and mini-pool, or stroll through the vineyard to the old Jewish Synagogue .. while the children gather eggs, feed the chooks, or ride the miniature Shetlands ... or perhaps feed the cows, spot the kangaroos, or draw the farm animals in the loft above the Cobb and Co coach house.
The buildings were used in Bryce Courtney's recent TV hit, The Potato Factory, starring Lisa McCune. Or perhaps you've seen the undulating countryside - flanked by pine, gum and wattle trees - in TV commercials for beer or Bailey's Irish Cream. Historic Lansdowne Park is the complete hide-away only a few minutes from the Goulburn township ... but a hundred miles from care.
