Todd Simpson: Bush Policy Wrong For America, Wrong For World
So the second round of the debates is over with a majority analysts saying that the debate was won (though narrowly) by
Al Gore. The debate, like the polls, provides us with very little indication any real leader in the race for the
Presidency. The results are simply too close to make meaningful distinctions. So then, if the major media outlets
themselves will give us no real indication, let us explore a few facts (gathered from the candidates own promotional web
sites) for ourselves. The debates seem to have left the public unaware of where these candidates stand on some issues.
Lets clear up a few things.
1.)George Bush opposes abortion except in cases of rape, incest or to save a woman’s life.
Governor Bush is hell bent to send America and American women back to the pre-Roe VS. Wade decision. This was the
landmark United States Supreme Court case, which laid the groundwork for women’s rights regarding abortion. If bush is
able to turn his policy into law, we can expect a lot more coat hanger styles abortions. The implication of this policy
as far as women’s rights go is staggering. Women will no longer be able to control their own reproduction; that decision
will belong to the state. And while George W. Bush talks about “smaller government”, this policy seems just slightly
Orwelian and indicates more government in your life, government not less. Where does Al Gore stand on abortion? He
respects the woman’s right to chose.
2.)George Bush opposes quotas and racial preferences.
Big shock here, Bush wants America to go back to the days of Jim Crowe where racial prejudice can’t really be quantified
or dealt with at all. Instead, Bush wants to leave such decisions at not hiring black people strictly to the good
countenance of racists with the ability to hire.
3.)George Bush opposes expanding hate crime laws.
Yet another shocker, rich, white, political fat cat opposes the governments ability to stop the spread of hate crime
towards minorities. I doubt if George W. Bush understands what hate crime even is. I’m curious as to whether he knows
that there are people of color in the United States as well as other often-harassed minorities such as the
American-Jewish population. I don’t think Bush has ever seen a cross burning on his lawn, or been attacked by a raging
group of neo-nazis. There is little hate crime in Bush’s neighborhood, and in his “world’
4.)George Bush SUPPORTS oil and gas exploration in the Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge.
I must admit, even I was taken aback by this. He admits to wanting to rip up as much of our country as possible in the
search for oil. Evidently he has no respect for the natural treasures of the country and no respect for wild life of any
kind. To this same end, Bush is not in favor of the Kyoto Global Warming Agreement, which is concerned with trying to
reduce the frightening acceleration of global warming.
5.)Bush SUPPORTS extending permanent normal trade relations with china.
The current government in China has repeatedly shown that they have no concern for human rights at all. They continue to
perform flagrant human rights abuses and are ranked near the top of the list for doing so by such organizations as
Amnesty International. So what do we do about their unjustified cruelty to their own citizenry? We extend them full
trade status! What planet is George W. Bush from that he can consider such an idea?
6.)Opposes further IMF loans to Russia.
As if trading with China was not a bad enough idea, now he wants to starve our cold war counterpart straight into the
poor house. This is a particularly bad idea in light of the fact that Russia still has one of the largest caches of
nuclear weapons and weapons grade plutonium in the world. Removing support from a heavily armed and newly formed
governmental body is like putting gasoline on a fire. Either, the rate of black market export for Soviet nuclear arms
will increase dramatically, or some civil disturbance will again arise resulting in a new micro government having its
own thermo-nuclear weapon.
All of this policy seems to be heading in quite the wrong direction from what is best for America and best for the
world. The fact that George W. Bush is so close in this race for the leadership of America gives me concern not just for
America, but for the rest of the world as well. Again I’m tempted to end with God Help us. Alas, I must now extend the
grasp of my concern. God help us all.
