Ex CM Haryana, Jan Nayak Ch.Devi Lal and Haryana Chief Minister, Mr.Om Prakash Chautala offered full support of the people of Haryana to Mr.Mahendra Pal Chaudhry, Prime Minister, People’s Coalition Government of Fiji in his endeavour to restore democracy in Fiji.
Speaking at the 8th Special Convocation of the Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak, where Mr Chaudhry was awarded an honorary degree of D.Lit in recognition of his pioneering and exemplary service in improving the lot of his countrymen and his fight for the cause of democracy and social justice. The degree was awarded by the Chancellor of the University and Governor Haryana, Mr.Babu Parmanand.
Mr.Mahendra Pal Chaudhry while expressing his gratitude for the warm welcome which he received on his arrival in the State earlier and also for the honorary degree, said that these would go a long way in not only strengthening the ties between the two nations but also in inspiring the people in Fiji to attain higher education. He said that had he been honoured in happy days, the joy would have been different for him and for the members of his family.
In an emotionally choked voice, he said that the people of Haryana had showered so much love and affection upon him that he was feeling at home but added that he never had such a reception in Fiji. "For a moment it appeared as if I was in my own political constituency", he added.
He said that he had deep family and personal links with Haryana as his grandfather had migrated to Fiji in 1912. He said that he was aware of the prayers made by the people of India including those of Haryana when he was in captivity in Fiji. He said that it was unfortunate that universal values of democracy had been violated in Fiji. He said that injustice had been inflicted upon the people of Indian origin in Fiji. At present, he was struggling for righteousness and to restore democracy in Fiji.
The honour which he had received signified the high democratic values of dignity which education holds.
Mr.Chautala said that Mr.Chaudhry had done proud to Haryana which was a land of brave soldiers. He reminded that out of 400 soldiers who sacrificed their lives while silencing the guns of the enemy in Operation Vijay at Kargil, 101 of them hailed from Haryana and 34 of them belonged to Rohtak district. He said that Mr.Chaudhry had also been fighting a battle for his rights and we extend him our whole hearted support.
