Rubens Barrichello win's German Grand Prix : Greeting an almost unprecedented standing ovation from the press a truly moved Barrichello wiped tears of elation with the Brazilian flag then dedicated his daring wet weather victory to his mentor, countryman and friend Ayrton Senna. Legendary driver Senna died at Imola six years ago and Barrichello was seen as his natural successor. Now with a taste of victory after 123 starts "Rubens has come of age'' according to his Ferrari team.
NZer Scott Dixon leads Indy Lights: Young Kiwi tyro Scott Dixon continued to drive beyond his 20 years when recording his third win of the season to take a 12 point lead in the ultra-competitive Indy Lights series.
Venus beats Lindsay, again: With her typical power, finesse and agility Williams repeated her Wimbledon effort to take the Palo Alto title off defending champ Davenport 6-1 6-4.
Disgraced Cronje joins media spin king Max Clifford: After wrecking his reputation and career former Bok cricket captain Hansie Cronje is understood to be enlisting the help of PR guru Max Clifford to see if they can spin a yarn worth selling.
Youngest ever LPGA winner: In the footsteps of Tiger Woods another minority youngster Dorothy Delasin rewrote the pages of golf history by being, at 19-years-old, the youngest winner of a LPGA event when victorious in the Giant Eagle Classic.
Petit leaves Arsenal for Barcelona and Bosnich is off to Celtic: Influential French midfielder Emmanuel Petit is leaving Arsenal and his long-time mentor Arsene Wenger in order to chase European football glory at super club F.C. Barcelona. Australian goalkeeper Mark Bosnich is moving to Celtic from Manchester United with French stopper Fabian Barthez certain to take the No 1 shirt for the Red Devils this season.
Kournikova opts out of Olympics: Tennis golden girl Anna Kournikova has decided the Sydney Olympiad "doesn't fit into her schedule" according to Russian Tennis Federation President Shamil Tarpishchev.
Hopoate's mum cry's "racism" Western Tigers winger John Hopoate's mum has accused the National Rugby League (NRL) of racism after her son received an extraordinary charge relating to 10 separate offences several of which were obvious non-events when shown clearly in slow motion video.
Tua want's close to NZ $8million to fight Lewis: David Tua's camp will accept no less than the US $4 million which Michael Grant received to fight Lewis.
NFL greats inducted into the hall of fame: Gridiron greats Joe Montana (the game's most vaunted quarterback and a bona fide San Francisco legend) and Ronnie Lott (Montana's teamate through a series of 49er Super Bowls Lott was a consummate pro athlete who was renowned as one of the hardest hitters ever).
Wellington Lions thrashed: The futility of player backing up in a warm-up game 48 hours after rugged club finals was demonstrated when Taranaki thrashed an inept and obviously tired Wellington Lions 46-10.
Scoop looks at today's All Black selection: Today Wayne Smith, Tony Gilbert and Peter Thorburn issue the All Black 22 to face the Wallabies in the BLedisloe decider in Wellington on Saturday. While Smith and co have talked up the test as just another game to be won..it is the Bledisloe and Tri Nations decider and everyone knows it so the pressures on and the first test is the selection. We'd expect the back three of Jonah Lomu, Christian Cullen and Tana Umaga to team up with Alama Ieremia and Pita Alatini in the centres. Justin Marshall and Andrew Merthens will start in the halves but the loose forward trio remains a lottery. The tip is Taine Randell to return to No8 with Reuben Thorne and Josh Kronfeld on the sides. This leaves the athletic, skilled but less experienced Ron Cribb on the sideline to attack the Wallabies after pressure has hopefully being soaked up. Thorne is likely to return to face the big bodies of Mark Connor ands Matt Cockbain. Norm Maxwell and Troy Flavell will both see game time with Norm likely to run on with captain Todd Blackadder. In front the Otago trio of Kees Meeuws, Anton Oliver and Carl Hoeft should stay for consistency. The bench will have Byron Kelleher, Tony Brown and probably Leon MacDonald although Doug Howlett deserves a go and would not be a surprise. Up front the impact will come from Cribb, Flavell, Craig Dowd and Mark Hammett.
