Mugabe Set To Win Zimbabwe Elections

President Mugabe’s ZANU PF party is likely to hold onto power in Zimbabwe, although its majority has been significantly reduced.

With 21 seats still to be declared, the ZANU PF party has exceeded its target of 45 seats in the 150 seat Parliament, winning a total of 51 so far.

With another 20 MPs handpicked by the President, the Government will almost certainly have an outright majority in the house over the (MDP) Movement for Democratic Change, currently on 48 seats.

There also is controversy over the appointment of a further 10 members to be elected by a council of chiefs.

The government has postponed this second vote amid opposition claims the government is scared the chiefs will support the MDC.

The result, while a defeat for the opposition, represents a radical improvement from the previous election where it won only three representatives.
