NEWSFLASH: Zimbabwe Opposition Ahead In Early Poll

As elections get underway in Zimbabwe the main opposition party the Movement for Democratic Change has taken an early lead, winning 18 of the first 33 districts in the country’s most hotly contested elections in its 20 year history.

The early counting leaves President Mugabe’s ruling ZANU-PF party with only 15 seats and the important loss of both the ministers of transport and national affairs. Previously the opposition had only held three under President Robert Mugabe’s regime which has dominated Parliament for all 20 years of the country’s independence.

Both parties have predicted to win the weekend elections.

As both sides waited for more results to come in, international observers from the European Union said the campaign was badly tainted by violence and threats and could not be considered free and fair.

Vote counting continues.
