One of the world’s leading authorities on science, Professor Sir John Cadogan, is giving a public lecture on ‘From Pure
Science to Profit’ next week at Victoria University.
Professor Cadogan will discuss the role that pure science plays in innovation and creativity, and the belief that
science and technology is the root of all economic and social progress. He is particularly interested in the
popularisation of science and is an advocate for strong links between science and industry.
Professor Cadogan’s lecture will be held on Tuesday 23 November 1999 at 6:00pm in the Maclaurin Theatre, Victoria
University.
Professor Cadogan is visiting the University as part of a New Zealand Institute of Chemistry (NZIC) conference exploring
chemistry into the new millennium. Organisers are expecting 200 people to attend the conference, a leading one of its
kind in New Zealand. The conference, which is part of Victoria University’s centennial celebrations, is sponsored by the
NZIC, Industrial Research Limited and BRANZ.
Professor Cadogan is Visiting Professor of Chemistry at Imperial College and Honorary Professorial Fellow, University
College, Swansea. He became Director of Research at British Petroleum (BP) after an outstanding career in academia.
The first Director General of Research Councils, Office of Science and Technology, Professor Cadogan has served on
numerous professional bodies, boards and committees, including the Higher Education Funding Council for England, the
Board of Governors of the European Union Joint Research Centre and the 1993 Royal Commission on Criminal Justice.
Professor Cadogan was knighted in 1991.
