MONTY PRAISES KIWI COURSE
Scottish Golfing superstar Colin Montgomerie has today paid New Zealand golf the highest compliment.
As the Scotsman continues his fine form at the Dunhill Cup, he has just voted Gulf Harbour's 16th hole the third best golf hole in the world.
Gulf Harbour's sensational and challenging hole has won the honour ahead of golf courses such as St Andrews, Pebble Beach and Royal Melbourne.
Montgomerie - not renowned for his outbursts of emotion - says the hole is quite simply a wonderful test of golf.
"You drive over the harbour. You walk down the 15tyh green to the 16th tee and you look at this thing and think: "how the hell am I going to hit this fairway? They've built a fabulous bridge which must be 300 yards long and it winds its way through the jungle, the forest and cliffs," the Scot enthuses.
Montgomerie made his comments in the latest edition of British Airways In Flight magazine, High Life.
"Voting Gulf Harbour number three in the world is a huge tribute," says Gulf Harbour's Director of Golf Richard Ellis.
"We knew Monty loved the course when he played the World Cup last year - it's great that he's backed up his praise with such a wonderful endorsement."
The 16th hole is a par four 424 metre long challenge that claims a number of victims. The hole has a 100ft cliff, which divides the tee and the fairway - and this is where many golfers come unstuck.
Montgomerie also praised the hole's amazing 270 degree scenery - which overlooks the Hauraki Gulf and the America's Cup Course.
The golfer - who is presently the world number three - is showing his usual fine form for Scotland in the Dunhill Cup - winning the countries first match comfortably.
