For Immediate Release September 22, 1999
STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY
The death of Sander Thoenes of the Financial Times is a tragic reminder of the dangers faced by the people of East Timor, the international security presence and the courageous journalists like Mr. Thoenes who are the eyes and ears of the international community. The international media must have the freedom and security to shine a spotlight on events in East Timor and accurately report on the situation on the ground. We will remember Mr. Thoenes for his outstanding work and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time.
