Fuse - Shaking APEC Down

Shaking APEC down: Fuse, a performance dance party exploring community focused alternatives to APEC
Auckland’s dance underground is rising up with a party aimed to offer alternatives to APEC on the night of the leaders’ banquet. FUSE is a multi-media performance/dance event opposing APEC and the rampant free market.
It takes place in the Classic Comedy Club, just 50 metres from the Town Hall, where visiting dignitaries will be carving up New Zealand’s finest offerings.
FUSE is organised by a group of central city Aucklanders fed up with the New Right steamroller.
“We oppose APEC because it is part of an economic strategy which works against the interests of the vast majority of New Zealanders,” says one of the organisers, Peter Porteous
“Demolishing protections on trade and ownership of New Zealand assets will undermine our economic independence,” he says.
“A tiny section of New Zealand - the very rich - will benefit greatly. So will huge transnational companies. The rest of us will pay the price.”
FUSE organisers predict jobs will be destroyed, wages and working conditions driven down, and environmental safeguards eroded if the APEC agenda succeeds.
“Free market policies over the past 15 years have already produced these results in New Zealand. APEC will just ensure that they’re here to stay, ”says another organiser, Stuart Sontier.
The FUSE crew believes the APEC agenda can be reversed through united community resistance and the growth of positive alternatives. Information will be freely available on the night to encourage discussion in an atmosphere of peaceful protest.
“We call for policies which strengthen local economies and job-rich growth. We call on leaders to offer a vision for the future which fosters strong communities, supports healthy families and promotes individual fulfilment,” says Sontier.
Tickets $10 waged, $7 unwaged/low waged.
