New Constitution For A Stronger PSA

New Zealand's largest union, the PSA, will be stronger and better able to advance the working rights of its 43,000 members after delegate's voted for a new sector-based constitution.

Delegates also endorsed the PSA's Partnership for Quality strategy at the special conference, continuing in Wellington today.

PSA president Kathy Higgins said the constitutional change was "long overdue but equally we had to be thorough in making such a significant move forward and we had to have the complete backing of our membership."

The PSA has moved from an outdated and cumbersome branch approach to a national sector structure devolving responsibility and decision making power to sector representatives.

An executive board - made up of the president, sector representatives and managers - will oversee the day to day running of the union while an elected National Delegates Congress will determine the union's overall policy and direction.

"This decentralised structure sits well with our partnership approach and what we want to achieve with that - quality jobs for our members and quality services for the New Zealand public," Ms Higgins said.
