Guild congratulates Community Pharmacy of the Year

Guild congratulates Community Pharmacy of the Year, Feilding Health Pharmacy

The Pharmacy Guild of New Zealand (the Guild) congratulates Feilding Health Pharmacy for winning the Community Pharmacy of the Year award at the 2018 Pharmacy Awards held on Saturday night (28 July).

This year’s awards ceremony was held at the Museum of Transport and Technology in Auckland and saw approximately 320 pharmacists and pharmacy stakeholders from around the country attend the event.

Guild Chief Executive, Andrew Gaudin says “The Guild was extremely honoured to co-host the 2018 Pharmacy Awards for the fourth time alongside Pharmacy Today. At the Guild we aspire to see the highest quality of care delivered to patients through community pharmacy in New Zealand and it is a privilege to be so closely involved with an event that celebrates this work. This year we were honoured to have Minister of Health, Dr David Clark, join us for the evening and address the audience about his vision for the health sector.

“The Guild was proud to again sponsor the Community Pharmacy of the Year award. This year the prestigious award went to Guild member pharmacy, Feilding Health Pharmacy, who is thoroughly deserving of this recognition and a prime example of what our patients’ value about community pharmacy.

“The runner up in this category was Vivian Pharmacy who is also delivering an outstanding service to their community. The judges visited the two finalist pharmacies to see them in action and decide the winner. We are extremely grateful to all pharmacies who took the time to enter this award category and share the excellent work they are doing for the benefit of their patients.”

The judges said both pharmacies put forward deserving entries and it was difficult to choose a winner. Feilding Health Pharmacy hasn’t let its rural location stop it from developing a model that puts people first by providing quality care, as well as reducing additional travel and costs for patients. It all started in 2016 when several Feilding pharmacy owners decided to join their businesses together and secure the lease of a new pharmacy in response to local GPs merging their practices. The new business provides a comprehensive range of services, including vaccinations, warfarin management and free emergency contraception to women under the age of 25. Most notable is the work the company’s pharmacists have achieved in developing an innovative service through MidCentral Community Pharmacy Group to provide prompt treatment for children with dehydration caused by gastroenteritis.

With a mission statement aimed at offering “health advice, drug information and awesome customer service”, community is a common theme in everything the Vivian Pharmacy team does. Owners Catherine Keenan and Amanda Eichstaedt have focussed on five pillars to improve health and business outcomes: leadership, site expansion, business planning, management and communication. In October 2017, the pharmacy completed a major building redevelopment project to expand the pharmacy’s services by creating a number of specialised work spaces. Services offered in addition to normal dispensing include a robotic dispensary, hospice service, and a citywide delivery service.

At the awards we acknowledged a range of outstanding services, and it is our desire to see these services being embedded throughout the pharmacy sector in everyday practice. Our congratulations go out to all 2018 finalists and winners who are:
