World Breastfeeding Week – Big-Latch-On celebration McFaddens Centre, Christchurch
The first week in August is World Breastfeeding Week. The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action theme for 2018
celebrates breastfeeding as a secure foundation of lifelong good health for babies and mothers with a focus on the
positive links between breastfeeding and nutrition, food security and poverty reduction. Protection, promotion and
support for breastfeeding women is vital to a more sustainable world. Whilst drawing attention to what is needed to
start and continue breastfeeding, including whānau and community support, longer paid maternity leave, evidence-based
non-judgmental support, and supportive workplaces and early childhood centres, breastfeeding is being celebrated all
around New Zealand with Big-Latch-On events. Women and their supporters will be coming together in urban and rural
centres, and on Friday 3rd August the Canterbury Breastfeeding Advocacy Service will host a BLO at the McFaddens Centre,
at 64 McFaddens Road in St Albans, Christchurch. This free event starts at 9.30am, with morning tea served from 10am.
Women planning to breastfeed as part of the event need to arrive by 10.15am at the latest for the BLO at 10.30am. There
will be spot prizes, and toddler entertainment with a puppet show and songs. Women who are unable to attend an event can
participate with a breastfeeding ‘selfie’ (#brelfieNZ).
