MidCentral District Health Board Chief Executive Officer Kathryn Cook is grateful to everyone who provided support and
assistance at DHB facilities during the NZNO nursing strike.
The majority of NZNO nursing staff took part in strike action between 7am Thursday 12 July and 7am Friday 13 July.
Ms Cook said she was happy to report that there were no major incidents at Palmerston North Hospital or the Horowhenua
Health Centre over the 24-hour strike period.
She said that despite the challenging circumstances, the Hospital continued to operate in an efficient and effective
manner due to a collaborative and supportive effort by many people.
“We want to thank all staff, staff volunteers, family and whānau who came together to care for patients during the
strike action.
“We also want to thank the public for their understanding and support over the 24-hour period.
“The team spirit displayed by the clinical and non-clinical staff working or volunteering during the strike was
incredible, and I feel very priviledged to lead such a great organisation.”
Ms Cook thanked those staff who chose to picket during the strike action for their amicable approach.
“We respect the right of all NZNO members to strike. Our focus now is for all staff to continue to work together in a
collaborative and respectful manner, and in the best interests of our patients and the community.”
Ms Cook said the hospital was returning to business as usual today, including the Emergency Department which is
operating as normal.
