New Mums receive special quilts on Mother’s Day!
New mothers at Wellington Regional Children’s Hospital will be receiving a special gift pack this Mother’s Day. Each package contains a beautiful handmade quilt, a beanies and bootees set, and a soft-toy Hospi. The Mother’s Day gifts are made possible thanks to a wonderful team of volunteers, coordinated by Wellington Hospitals Foundation.
Trish Lee, Volunteer Manager at Wellington Hospitals Foundation, said that her team of over 200 volunteer knitters, sewers and quilters work hard throughout the year, creating over 9000 items annually. A special effort is made by all to produce 60 gift packs in time for Mother’s Day. All mothers and babies in the Wellington Neonatal Intensive Care Unit on Mother’s Day will receive a gift pack, as will all new babies born at Wellington, Kenepuru and Kapiti Coast Delivery Suites on Mother’s Day.
Deb Davenport, Acting Charge Nurse Manager at Wellington Neonatal Intensive Care Unit said, “It’s great to see the appreciation on mother’s faces when we give them their special Mother’s Day gift pack from Wellington Hospitals Foundation. It really makes them feel special.”
Onslow College
In addition to Trish’s volunteers, the Year 10 Textile Design Class at Onslow College also make a huge effort to create quilts for mothers and their babies on Mother’s Day. The students work together to design and sew their own special quilt. The class then donate the quilts to Wellington Hospitals Foundation to go in the Mother’s Day gift packs. Sue Hannaway, who teaches Textiles and Design at Onslow College said, “The class have been taking part in the Mother’s Day initiative for the last five years.”
Quilting Group
A special mention must also be made to Sue B’s Quilting Group who have for the past eight years supplied quilts for both Mother’s Day and Christmas Day gift packages. Sue and her small team, in the last eight years, have produced over two-thousand quilts to support Wellington Hospitals Foundation and patients at Wellington Regional Hospitals.
All volunteers involved in the Mother’s Day gift pack initiative, along with Wellington Hospitals Foundation wish all mothers a very special day!
Wellington Hospitals Foundation has a team of over 450 volunteers, who assist staff in a number of areas in Wellington Regional Hospitals.
