Māori nursing focus at Hawke’s Bay convention
Many nurses are gathering formally around the regions as the NZNO Annual Regional Conventions continue. Te Matau a Māui
(Hawke’s Bay) Regional Convention is on Today 3 May at the Water Bar in Napier.
NZNO president Grant Brookes and Kaiwhakahaere Kerri Nuku will be attending.
A highlight of the day is guest speaker Ngaira Harker, Nurse Director, Māori Health, at Hawke’s Bay DHB, who will be
talking about the voice of Māori nurses.
As well as giving a glimpse into her own career, Ngaira will be discussing how to increase the contribution of Māori
nurses and improve Māori health outcomes.
“To have a Māori nursing workforce representative of the population it serves we need to support Māori nursing workforce
growth,” she said. “Collectively we also need to better engage culturally as well as clinically to improve health
outcomes.”
Shannon Bradshaw, Māori Midwifery Consultant at Hawke’s Bay DHB, will also be speaking.
The theme for the 2018 conventions is “Nurses a Voice to Lead – Health Is a Human Right”, in line with the International
Council of Nurses’ theme for this year’s International Nurses’ Day, 12 May.
