Employed Midwives – which union represents them

Published: Tue 10 Apr 2018 06:47 PM
In some media stories about the NZNO MECA (multi-employer collective employment agreement) negotiations and industrial action mention is being made at times about ‘nurses and midwives’.
MERAS would like to clarify that the majority of hospital employed midwives across the country are NOT members of NZNO and will not be involved in the NZNO industrial action. Most hospital employed midwives are members of MERAS.
MERAS is a union led by midwives for midwives that only represents employed midwives. MERAS has currently suspended its MECA negotiations and will recommence these once NZNO settle their agreement.
MERAS is affiliated to New Zealand College of Midwives .
The issues for Midwifery are different to those of nursing.
