Deaf people with disabilities navigate three worlds

Deaf people with additional disabilities navigate three different worlds on a daily basis: the Deaf world, the hearing world, and the disability world. Today, Deaf Action NZ released “Inclusive NZSL Communities,” a series of video clips highlighting the experiences and insights of six Deaf people with additional disabilities who use New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL). The clips are available online at www.deafaction.org.nz/inclusive-nzsl-communities.

The information shared is relevant for those who know and work with Deaf people with disabilities in education, in services, in the workplace or within their family.

Funded by the NZSL Board, the project was a Deaf ecosystem in action. The producer, director, and presenters are all Deaf

The six Deaf people with additional disabilities including cerebral palsy, autism and low vision spoke about their identity, the different worlds they are part of, equality and challenges. They also discuss inclusion within the Deaf Community.

Deaf Action NZ is a voluntary group dedicated to advancing the human rights of Deaf and Hard of Hearing people in New Zealand.
