Baths Sink as Kiwis Prefer to Shower

Baths Sink as Kiwis Prefer to Shower

Auckland, 26 January 2018. It’s the debate that’s been raging for years, which one is best, bath or shower? But it looks like Kiwis might finally be making up their minds.

The latest survey of over 2,000 people from Kiwi comparison site Canstar Blue reveals that 85% of New Zealanders prefer taking a shower to a bath.

Canstar Spokesperson Emma Quantrill comments:

“Across the board, every age group we spoke to preferred showers to baths so it’s certainly not a generational thing. Maybe it’s the speed and convenience of a shower, or for some it could be the idea of using less water, which make them so popular.”

Do showers get you cleaner?
There doesn’t look to be any solid research but internet and social media chat reveals that people think it’s actually the bath that gets you cleaner. The reasoning? The dirt that you remove from your skin tends to fall away from your body in a bath and a good soak is also needed to soften and remove all of your dead skin cells. A shower doesn’t give you the time or ability to soak long enough to do this.

It has also been argued that baths are usually more thoroughly cleaned then showers (because they’re easier to clean). As a result, a shower head is plausibly dirtier than bath taps and a shower tray dirtier then a bath. You’re also more likely to come into contact with mould and mildew in a shower than a bath for the same reason.

Quantrill continues:

“Although for over half of us, cleaning the bathroom is our least favourite household chore, three quarters of Kiwis do it at least once per week. So, we’re obviously confident that our showers aren’t too dirty and for now at least, we think showers are the business it comes to keeping clean.”

What do people clean their bathroom with?
The Canstar Blue survey also showed that overwhelmingly, sprays were the most preferred type of cleaner but 63% of people worried about the amount of chemicals in their household cleaners. However, the market does have a number of options for the more environmentally conscious consumer with some brands basing their products on having no, or limited, damaging chemicals.

Satisfied customers
With this sentiment in mind, perhaps it’s not so surprising that the 2018 Most Satisfied Customers Award winner for bathroom cleaners is EcoStore.

Founded in Northland over 20 years ago, Ecostore prides itself on sourcing and creating products without the use of harmful and unnecessary chemicals. Such is their success, they now sell their products throughout the world.
