Tāne Ora Workshop Hosted To Improve Health of Māori Men
With Māori men’s health faring poorly compared with other New Zealanders across a number of indicators Mana Tāne Ora o Aotearoa (National Māori Men's Health Coalition) in partnership with Manaia Health and Te Taitokerau PHOs and Northland DHB are hosting a Tāne Ora regional hui on 13 September at 28 Rust Street, Whangarei.
“Māori male life expectancy in Northland is 71.3 years compared to non-Māori at 80.6 years,” explains Harold Wereta, General Manager Māori Health.
“Through our speakers we are promoting that change is possible and anyone can do this with life experience, commitment, strong support and dedication.”
The leading causes of death for Northland Māori men were Ischaemic heart disease, diabetes mellitus, accidents, lung cancer and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases. The underlying causes are also linked to social marginalism, poverty, inequalities and unequal access to health services.
“By bringing together Māori men from across Northland we are hoping to start a conversation and journey that will generate discussion and action and promote the view you are in control and all things are possible.
Also excited about the workshop are Manaia Health and Te Taitokerau chief executives Donovan Clarke and Jensen Webber, who are co-hosting the workshop alongside Northland DHB.
“We believe the Mana Tāne Ora workshop will provide an opportunity for men to share stories and connect with other local groups tackling issues such as violence, depression and men's health, “offered Donovan.
Although the workshop is focused on Tāne Ora, we invite registrations from both men and women who would like to share in this journey. The workshop is free and limited to 80 participants due to venue capacity.
Registrations are now open and close on Friday, 08 September 2017.
