Alcohol and drug addiction under scrutiny

Adolescent drinkers, alcohol and injury, methamphteamine impacts, gambling research, substance abuse and smoking cessation strategies – these are some of the topics to engage more than 90 health professionals in Auckland on Monday.

They are attending the University of Auckland’s one-day symposium on alcohol and drug addiction, run by the Centre for Addictions Research at the Tamaki Campus.

Public health professionals interested in addiction issues will attend from those representing care and recovery services and district health boards, to Government ministeries and community agencies.

The programme features more than 23 speakers including the Director of the Centre for Addictions Research (CFAR), Professor Janie Sheridan.

There are several presentations on alcohol and adolescent drinkers, an update on addictions-related research by the Gay Men’s Sexual Health Research Group, the impact on children exposed to methamphetamine, and an Australian/New Zealand collaboration on conflicts of interest and moral dilemmas in gambling research.
