Dunedin Hospital celebrates 150th Anniversary
Long-serving and retired employees will have a chance to share their fond memories and proudest work moments when the Southern District Health Board marks the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Dunedin Hospital on the Great King Street site with a celebration on Friday 26 August.
Initially established in 1851 near the Octagon, the Dunedin Hospital moved to its present site in 1866.
Friday’s celebration at the Ground floor foyer, will bring together current and former employees along with senior representatives from the Southern DHB, the University of Otago Dunedin School of Medicine, and other stakeholders to recount major developments over the years and reflect on the significance of the hospital to the community and the district.
“The Dunedin Hospital is at the heart of this community and has made a substantive contribution, not only to the health of our district’s population, but to the growth and prosperity of Dunedin and the whole southern area over the years,” says SDHB Commissioner Kathy Grant.
The 150th Anniversary celebrations will commence at 10am with a Mihi Whakatau, followed by speeches, a plaque unveiling, and, of course, a cake cutting.
