Senior doctors welcome Government inquiry into contaminated water

The union for senior doctors and dentists working in public hospitals is welcoming the Government’s decision to initiate an independent inquiry into the Havelock North water contamination issue.

“While this event is unexpected and very rare – fortunately – it is serious and warrants a rigorous, independent investigation,” says Ian Powell, Executive Director of the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists (ASMS).

“Even if no mistakes have been made there will be much to learn from this rare event. In the unlikely case of a similar event in the future, what is learnt from this inquiry should help us to better respond.”

Mr Powell was commenting on Health Minister Jonathan Coleman’s announcement today of an inquiry: https://www.beehive.govt.nz/release/govt-initiated-inquiry-havelock-north-water.

“The hard work of medical specialists and other health professionals in this difficult situation is to be commended,” says Mr Powell.
