Families relieved Government Plan to address Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder
FASD-CAN, a charitable organisation set up to unite and support families living with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder
(FASD) is pleased the Government has launched a cross-ministry Action Plan, to address the neglected and pressing
problems families living with FASD experience daily.
FASD-CAN Chairperson Mrs Claire Gyde say it is encouraging that families living with this disability were consulted
through the process, listened to and had their genuine needs acknowledged.
“Our children with FASD live with a hidden, misunderstood and marginalised disability. FASD is a permanent and severe
brain-based disability, which makes a person vulnerable to negative influences and challenging for their families to
care for alone.
“When services for one reason or another do not recognise the disability and accommodate the needs of families living
daily on the edge of crisis, life can very quickly unravel and deteriorate. The Government Plan is a positive step
toward plugging the service gaps and our hope is to continue involvement through the implementation phases.”
