Patients and staff at Ashburton Hospital are on the move as the next stage of refurbishment draws closer.
Bernice Marra, Ashburton Health Services Manager, says although construction of the new Acute Assessment Unit/Theatre has been the focus for some time, work has been ongoing behind the scenes for the decanting of several areas, including Ward 1, which will move mid July for around six months.
“The 21-bed ward will relocate from the ground floor to the former Ward 3 upstairs, which has already been refurbished. It will operate with 18 beds during this time.”
Bernice says the move is expected to take place on Wednesday July 13, with more information being provided to inpatients and families in the days leading up to the move.
“Planning has had to be very particular to ensure patient safety during the moves,” she says.
“We have tried to reduce the impact on patients and staff with any movement and once all the refurbishments and moves are complete, areas will be more modern and fit for purpose.”
Refurbishments are mostly cosmetic and include painting, new floor coverings and a new nurse call system. This will include changes to the existing Acute Assesment Unit (AAU) once they move to the new build.
The complete project, which includes the new build and refurbishments, is expected to finish in the first half of 2017.
