NZMA welcomes tobacco plain packaging
The New Zealand Medical Association (NZMA) welcomes news the Government intends to introduce a standardised packaging regime for tobacco products.
“The NZMA has long advocated the introduction of plain packaging as a way of supporting people to quit smoking,” says NZMA Chair Dr Stephen Child. “It’s a measure that is proving successful in Australia, along with regular tax increases on tobacco products.
“The tax increases announced in last week’s Budget show the Government believes fiscal instruments such as this work in reducing consumption. We would welcome the consistency of application of price regulation to other potentially harmful products.”
