Capital & Coast DHB to double its MRI capacity
Capital & Coast DHB has approved the purchase of a second MRI scanner, which will more than double the number of patients seen a
week by the end of next year, Board Chair Dr Virginia Hope says.
“At present around 70 patients per week received MRI scans and by the end of next year we will be able to see 150
patients a week,” Dr Hope said.
“MRI scans are considered a definitive test that can help spot issues such as inflammation, infections or growths early,
leading to more informed choices, earlier treatment and better outcomes for patients. As a result demand for MRI scans
has grown by 20 percent over the last five years.
“Having two scanners means we will be able to see patients’ faster, as well as meet future increases in demand. Having
the two scanners located side by side is also the most efficient way to double capacity, while keeping set-up and
resourcing costs to a minimum.”
Clinical Leader of Radiology Dr James Entwisle said having two scanners would make an enormous difference for patients
and staff.
“For staff having the two scanners side by side means that we can work really efficiently and for patients it means
shorter waiting times, so this is a really positive step forward,” Dr Entwisle said.
The MRI project will cost $6.5 million and will involve purchasing a new MRI scanner and will also allow for the upgrade
the existing one. Building work will begin later this year and both machines are expected to be fully operational by
late 2016.
“This project has been possible due to the support of the Wellington Hospital Foundation, who is fundraising $1million.
Their support has been crucial in allowing this project to move ahead,” Dr Hope said.
The on-going running costs of the additional MRI scanner will be funded by savings made from integrating the hospital
and community laboratories.
