Nursing Council role for Whitireia Faculty of Health Dean
Following on from her appointment to the Ministry of Health’s expert advisory group for the review of the New Zealand
Health Strategy, Whitireia Faculty of Health Dean Dr Kathryn Holloway has also been appointed to the board of the
Nursing Council of New Zealand.
She was appointed by Health Minister Jonathan Coleman and will serve on the Council’s board for a period of three years.
Dr Holloway worked as a nurse in New Zealand, Australia and the UK before moving into nursing education in 1992. She
joined Whitireia in 1996 and has been instrumental in the development of the Faculty of Health.
“Whitireia has been incredibly supportive of my involvement in these advisory roles,” said Holloway.
“The organisation is deeply committed to the ongoing improvement of our health system.”
Dr Holloway’s academic research has focussed on the development of a specialist nursing framework for New Zealand, the
development of best practice guidelines for simulation in nursing education, and the evaluation of the Nursing Entry to
Practice (NETP) programme.
The role of the Nursing Council is to protect the public by setting standards for nursing in New Zealand. The Council
itself is an organisation established under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act. The board of the Council
is made up of nine members, six of these are nurses and three are laypeople.
