KFC New Zealand Gives Rice the Special Treatment
As fast food brands around the world tailor their menus to suit local tastes, KFC in New Zealand is responding to the
changing tastes of kiwis by adding rice to its menu.
The decision to trial rice on the menu comes after a recent survey of KFC customers revealed over 80 percent eat rice at
least once a week. But it’s not just KFC customers who are eating the popular grain. New Zealand’s rice consumption has
increased by 30% since 2005 with kiwis now eating 16,401 tonnes of it or 3.56kgs per New Zealander, each year.
KFC Marketing Director Clark Wilson says “knowing rice is now a staple food item for many kiwi families, and that our
customers are increasingly looking for different tastes and flavours, meant it was time for us to give rice a go on our
menu.”
He said KFC was giving rice the special treatment, infusing it with the Colonel’s 11 Secret Herbs & Spices. KFC fans will be able to order the KFC flavoured rice as a side or as part of the new Rice Box Meal.
The Rice Box meal includes KFC popcorn chicken, nestled on top of the rice, drizzled with teriyaki sauce, mayo and
finished with a blend of fresh spring onion and carrot.
“While this is the first time rice has been made available on the menu downunder, Rice Box meals have been well received
in other markets. Kiwi KFC fans will also be the first to get rice infused with the Colonel’s 11 Secret Herbs & Spices,” says Mr Wilson.
The Rice Box and a la Carte side of rice, which is available with any meal, will be available for the first time at KFC
stores nationwide from 21 July for a limited time.
RRP $7.90 for the Rice Box and $3 for the side of rice.
