Cantabrians need quality public health, not implied threats from the Govt

The Public Service Association (PSA) says Canterbury DHB (CDHB) needs to be given all necessary assistance to meet the needs of local residents still feeling the impact of a post-quake environment, not implied threats from the ministers of health and finance.

The PSA represents more than 1500 staff working at Canterbury DHB in mental health, clinical, technical and administrative roles.

Erin Polaczuk, PSA national secretary, said “CDHB staff have worked long and hard to support residents whose needs have changed in the post-quake environment,”

“Extra costs to cover rebuilding, and extra need for mental health services have both hit CDHB’s budget hard.

“Staff are doing all they can to keep it together, but ever-increasing workloads and the resulting stress require addressing.

“Staff salaries have suffered from the funding shortfalls, and this year health workers are demanding respect.

“The Government needs to acknowledge that the health sector is struggling right across the country, but in particular in Canterbury, due to chronic underfunding.

“New Zealanders deserve quality public healthcare, not tired excuses,” said Erin Polaczuk.
